Autism Charities

Updated on January 13, 2009

Autism And The Charities Offering Hope

See that little guy over there? That's my son, his name is Austin. I love him with all of my heart, and he loves being just like everyone else. It's a bit harder for him though, you see... he has Autism.

I was just 20 years old when he was born, it was a proud moment in my life and I do the best I can to help his mother raise a happy, loving little boy. He's 8 years old now and, while he still struggles academically compared to other children his age, he's doing some great things that other parents with Autistic children aren't as fortunate to experience. He plays well with other kids, he loves his parents and little brother, has friends (both in real life and his invisible friend 'Taco' - who for some reason is always naked). He learned to ride a bike, and now even rides a dirtbike.

We are so fortunate that Austin has earned himself as close to a normal life as an Autistic kid can, but it wasn't without cost. In addition to the emotional strain it puts on a family; Austin has endured countless hundreds of hours of physical and occupational therapy, gets treated differently by those who don't understand his condition, and struggles every day with school work and learning new things so he doesn't fall even further behind. He doesn't know it yet, but he's my inspiration.

Furtunately, The World Is Listening

While there is much speculation as to why Autism occurs, it's causes, and what can be done to prevent or cure this disorder are all far beyond the scope of this Lens. There are some wonderful Charity organizations that not only help children with Autism live better lives, they're leading the fight and working for a cure.

In addition to highlighting the leading Autism charities, I'd also like to showcase some of the wonderful Squidoo Lenses offering insight and information about Autism. Getting the word out, education and awareness, is just as helpful as being able to make financial contribution. We can all help in our own ways.

Autistic Inspiration

These videos show just how amazing Autistic children can be, and that with hard work and inspiration it's possible to do great things - even with Autism. Everyday more is learned, and with the help of charities and parents who care it gets better.

Notable Autism Charities

The following Autism charities are trusted, dedicated organizations leading the way to raise public awareness and fund the research working to improve the lives of those with Autism. They're also inspiring hope that one day prevention, or even a cure, is within our reach.
